Junior National Lead Coach Appointment

As a result of the great success of Matin Balsini at the Tokyo Olympics in 200m butterfly, Coach Kav Beik has been nominated to be a national Head Coach in the Middle East and as a result will not be joining us.

We are pleased to announce that Riaan Steyn will be the new Lead Coach of the Junior National Squad from the 31st August 2021. Riaan will be taking all his experience from being the assistant coach on this squad and long-time High-Performance Coach to continue to develop some of the best young swimmers in the Great Britain.

High Performance Head Coach Lee Spindlow commented: ‘This is a great appointment for not only the squad but also the Club. Riaan brings years of experience as a swimmer and coach and will be pivotal in developing swimmers from regional level on to national and potentially international success in the future.’

The ambition of this squad is to develop swim skills, aerobic endurance, and a full understanding of what it takes to be a High-Performance athlete. Riaan has the experience as a swimmer and coach in all these of key elements.

Riaan will be assisted by Julie Punter who is joining us from Staines Swimming Club.  Julie has over a decade’s experience in developing young swimmers at all levels and competed herself at British Nationals level.

Director of Swimming Richard Garfield stated “We believe the coaching partnership of Riaan and Julie will have a tremendous impact on the swimmers in Junior National Squad. We have every confidence that they will contribute to the overall success of Guildford City and that their squad members will receive the well-rounded aquatic education they need.”
